Abbreviated Course FAQs

In Ohio, if you are 18 or older and fail either the road or maneuverability portion of the driver's test, state law requires you to complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course before you are allowed to attempt the test again.

Yes. After completing this 4-hour online course, you have two options:
  1. Complete 4 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving school.
  2. Complete 24 hours of driving practice with a licensed driver (21 or older) and sign an official affidavit (BMV 5789).

Upon successful completion of the final exam, your certificate will be processed immediately. You can download and print it directly from your account. You must bring this certificate to the BMV when you retake your test.

No. You can schedule your retake at any Ohio BMV Exam Station once you have your Abbreviated Adult course certificate and have completed your required practice driving hours.

You only need to complete this course once. If you fail the test again after taking the course, you do not need to take it a second time—you simply have to wait the required 7-day period before attempting the test again.
